Earlier this week I went with Shelley to an antique shop. Usually I get mixed emotions by going to this kind of store, mainly because I try not to think of the people who once owned those items, people who have probably died.
However, the above large toybox (nearly four feet long) cheered me up. It looks lovingly homemade and home-painted, with child-themed decals. What’s especially charming is the poem fragment inside the lid, which I’ll include below in case it’s hard to read:
. . . and though in wisdom I shall grow,
and many worthwhile things shall know—
no matter what my learning be,
Lord, make a trusting child of me!
I don’t know who owned this toybox, but as they learned to read, this message was gradually sounded out and absorbed into their minds. And since this is most likely a Christian poem, the kids were no doubt surrounded by an atmosphere which impressed its truth upon them, including the One they should be trusting.
And of course its sentiments equally apply to anybody whose eyes happen to fall on this blog.
Here’s a chance to take a Bible tutorial on faith, another name for trust (while you’re at this link, also click on the “armor of God” one as well. Lots of good wisdom there):
