After glancing eastward out a window Wednesday morning, I snapped this photo with my smartphone. As you know, digital cameras don’t accurately record exactly what the human eye sees, because of the “averaging” effect of the light-metering. The sun actually looked a lot more fiercely orange than in the photo.

Later that morning I saw an online KOMO news story which said that at that moment, Seattle had the sixth worst air quality in the world, and that Vancouver, BC came in at fourth (subsequently some sources said we were further up in the ranks than sixth). More than one forest fire east of the Cascade Mountains is the cause of the crisis.

But the news story went on to give hope for a rapid improvement by the weekend, brought on by rain and onshore air flow. Since our church retreat is this weekend (and the air quality has been bad there as well), we’re hoping this prophecy comes true.

This reminded me about what the Bible says about the time when this old earth will be transformed back into a perfect second Eden. Interestingly, fire will be an initial part of the process.

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:10 – 13 NKJV)

Disconcerting words, right? Did you notice how the Lord wants us to respond to this news? “what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness.”

Whoa. More Bible is needed to fill in the blanks, right? Click the link just below for four very encouraging verses about righteousness and how we can obtain it.
