This past April I was strolling through a Barnes & Noble bookstore during what must have been a reorganization or re-stocking time. These fiction shelves didn’t have their products yet, and the staff had placed decorative but totally empty boxes as placeholders for what would eventually take their places.

As I look at this photo now, I think of all the “fictions” which have seduced humanity era after era. I’m not talking mainly about novels, but about ideas. The bottom line is that too many people have tended to reject the Creator’s truths and have chosen to believe what appeals to them at the moment, whether it’s human sacrifice, idol worship, carelessness about the Sabbath, dishonesty, thievery, adultery, and on and on.

Here’s a New Year’s resolution suggestion: using Scripture, go through your mental bookshelves and discard the fictions you’ve let yourself believe.
