For us in the Pacific Northwest, the last 10 days or so have been unseasonably cold. I know our temps don’t compare to some other parts of the US (or world for that matter) but for us in the Seattle area, 20 degrees Fahrenheit and below is on the frigid side.
In a recent work meeting, we were discussing the temperature and how to protect yourself from the elements if you plan on being outside. Someone commented, you can go out in any temperature if you have the correct gear. It reminded me of life. How can we survive the ‘elements’ of the world if we don’t have our “protective gear.” As Christians, we know the only thing truly protects us, in any situation, is our divine Creator. We can pull on the parka, the thick gloves, the heated hat, but nothing will protect us, like the loving hands of our God.
I spotted this American Robin in the parking lot of a store I was headed into. When I saw its big puffy feathers, I assumed it was a younger robin. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to ask for ID, so it may still be on the younger side but not as young as I thought. You see, the fluffy feathers weren’t due to its age, instead it was protecting itself against the 16-degree weather. Add in some windchill and it was very cold, and they were attempting to soak up some sunshine and stay relatively warm.
God is our protector. He is our fluffy down, covering our shivering bodies. The cold hard fact (see what I did there?) is – WE cannot survive without our protective gear – Jesus. I am so thankful to have that option when I am asked to face the world. So, the next time you are outside, in the cold, talk with your Protector and thank Him for all He does in your life.
