A few minutes ago, as I got the above photo ready for this Daily Photo Parable, it struck me that one of the reasons I like antique shops is NOT to buy antiques and take them home—I haven’t done this for years—but because antique shops contain many things you wouldn’t find in a regular store. One example is the statue above, which I photographed a week or so ago.

It’s cute, but I can’t figure out what the sculptor was trying to say. We see a monkey perched precariously atop a pile of books, one with “Darwin” on its spine. The monkey holds what looks like a human skull and is staring at it with an indecipherable expression.

So, what’s going on here? Did the sculptor imagine the human race evolving back into monkeys, and the monkey brooding over its ancestor? Or did some kind of apocalypse destroy the human race, and the monkey has paused while meandering through the resulting rubble?

Anyway, there’s no way of learning who created this, or who bought it, or who hauled it to a booth at the antique store. But there is a lot of evidence—not only from the Bible but from science—that macro (large-scale) evolution didn’t create us, but an Intelligent Designer did.

Maybe it’s put most crisply in Psalm 103 (ESV): “Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”
