I love taking images of water. I am mesmerized by the flow. It can be a small trickle, a puddle, a waterfall, or a raging river. With most cameras, you can “stop” the flow of the water, so it looks like it’s standing still (see image), or you can allow for the exposure to give the water a look of movement. Whatever the image looks like, water can represent several things – power, grace, motion, stillness, and even life.
Throughout the Bible, water was prominent in many stories. Noah and the Ark–think of all the water in that story. It covered the entire planet. What flowed out of the rock that Moses struck, while leading the children of Israel? Water. Jesus was baptized by John, in a river. The stories go on and on, just like a stream in the mountains.
One particular story regarding water is the story of the Samaritan woman by the well. The full story can be found in the book of John, chapter 4. Jesus, talking with the woman, asks for a drink from the well. What He gives in return is something very different then the drinking water from the well.
Verses 13 & 14 (NKJV):
Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.
What Jesus offers us, is something no one else can. He offers us eternal life. This life, springing up from the fountain. This is the River of Life. Just like the woman by the well, we have the opportunity to accept this gift. Say YES to the water our Creator is providing us.
