I found this plate in a thrift store a few months ago. The orchids were what caught my eye, the quality was attested to by the “Made in Germany” stamp on the back and the price of $5.99 sealed the deal and it came home with me!
It was only after I got home that I noticed it was hand painted in Manitoba, Canada, and it had the name of the lady who painted it on the back. That explains the showy lady’s slipper orchids depicted (on my bucket list to see in real life) but not the plate origin.
While I would call this a great find, I wouldn’t really call it a treasure. We can treasure a lot of things, like a note or a photo or a book or a song or a place or family or friends. While these are things we value, none of these things generally have any real monetary value.
Matthew talks about treasure:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moths and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6″19-21 (NIV)
These verses make me think they are talking about actual physical things of great value that can be stolen but maybe we should also be aware of what kind of things we (and I’m including myself) spend our time on.
