I was walking on one of the trails near the visitor’s center up on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park a number of years ago and came across some people peering into the brush. This little blacktail deer fawn was fast asleep in the grass. There were a number of deer snacking on bright yellow glacier lilies nearby and presumably one of them was its mother.
These does hide their fawns while they forage because the fawns are not that steady on their feet right after they are born but they do have great camouflage and the ability to keep very still so they can stay hidden in plain sight nearby. (If you come across one, just leave it where it is and don’t presume it has been abandoned.)
I like this psalm which is about how God is our hiding place:
For you are my hiding place;
you protect me from trouble.
You surround me with songs of victory. Interlude
The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.
I will advise you and watch over you.
Do not be like a senseless horse or mule
that needs a bit and bridle to keep it under control.”
Many sorrows come to the wicked,
but unfailing love surrounds those who trust the LORD.
So rejoice in the LORD and be glad, all you who obey him!
Shout for joy, all you whose hearts are pure!
Psalm 32:7-11 NLT
