For many of us, we will be celebrating Thanksgiving this week (unless you have already). Of course we know the actual day is a US (and a few other countries) holiday with historical roots in religious and cultural traditions. For me, among other things, it’s a day to reflect on the numerous blessings in my life. I was recently talking to a coworker and we started discussing all the challenges she was facing over the past week. She was describing her kids being sick, then she got sick, her dog was injured, and the list continued. Of course I showed sympathy and empathy about her situation, but as there was a pause in the conversation, I asked what was going “right”? She laughed and said, “You are absolutely correct – it could be so much worse.” My intention wasn’t to make light of all the problems she was facing (and she didn’t take it that way). I was merely pointing out the positives as well.
It’s true – we (including myself) can easily go down the negative path, listing all the challenges and concerns we have in our daily lives. Don’t get me wrong, there is a time and place to bring all those to God – set them at His feet, and walk away. What an incredible gift to have at our disposal. What we (me included) need to do is focus on the positives in our lives. Focus on the blessings. We know it in our hearts – God is good and provides more than we need. We have so much to be thankful for, and that list is WAY longer than the opposite.
Earlier this week, I had a chance to take our dog Taima on a walk in our neighborhood. Luckily he likes to stop about every 10 feet (maybe a little more often) to sniff around, checking on any other friends that walk the same path. I say, “luckily” because those pauses (not paws) gives me a chance to see what I can capture on my phone camera. On one of his “sniffing sessions” I saw the sunlight beaming down on this late-colored maple tree. The fence in front and the evergreen trees behind, allowed the oranges, reds and yellows to really show up. Seeing this scene and capturing this image allowed me to reflect on how thankful I am for the Creations our God has given us.
This Thursday, or if you celebrate on another day OR any day you choose – count your blessings. Make sure you take a pause and soak in what you are truly thankful for. Be sure to share your reflections with friends, family and most of all – God.
Happy Thankful Day!
