If you live outside of the Pacific Northwest you may have heard of the record high temperatures we’ve been living through the past few days. If you do live in the local area, you may be tired of hearing about the record high temperatures. Not only have we had the 100+ degrees, most of us don’t have central air conditioning, or any type of AC at all. Personally, the Milam house doesn’t have either, and the numerous box fans that have been running for the past week quite frankly are only pushing hot air around.
Relief can come in many forms. When speaking about high temperatures, ice in a cooler is a great relief. If we happen to be outdoors, the shade of a large tree can be an incredible relief. When we are contemplating the sinful world around us, that relief needs to come in a different form.
John 3:16 & 17 details the most perfect relief of all –
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
That right there is the only relief we need. God gave His Son, so Jesus could die in our place and allow us to have eternal life. How better to describe what relief looks like? We don’t have to stress about anything – just accept that relief.
The images at the top (Snoqualmie Falls, our front deck last winter, and Taima enjoying his favorite snack — ice) may give some of us a tiny bit of relief from this stifling heat wave the Pacific Northwest is having, but the two verses in the gospel of John provides an entire planet the relief that is truly needed.
