Earlier this week I paused at an ATM to get some cash. The money emerged just fine, and all was well until the receipt popped out at me. I stared at it, shocked. “Uh-oh,” I thought, “Some hacker has scooped out nearly everything from my checking account!”

I almost dialed Chase Bank in a panic, but then I took another look at the machine’s receipt-slot and saw the white edge of another receipt. I fished it out, and sure enough, it was my correct one. The first receipt belonged to someone else, who’d not bothered to remove it.

Aren’t there times when you and I feel quite worthless? “What use could I possibly be to God?” we wonder. “Maybe I’m beyond redemption. How can I tell if I have any value in heaven’s eyes?”

Paul gives us the answer: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NIV)
